RE. Thoughts on Technological Purity

Bradley Taunt's post on his OS use is a familiar thought process.

Everything should be running on OpenBSD. My desktop, router, web server, and even minor local services should all be built on top of the great Pufferfish BSD.

I've been a Linux user for years and had the same approach with everything being Debian. I like the stability vs. other distributions and the choice available during install makes it a great all rounder for desktops and servers. A couple of years ago I switched to a Macbook for my work laptop solely for the battery life. The different keyboard layout meant I then switched to a MacMini for my desktop. I still use Debian / Linux on my servers.

The challenge with Apple products is software changes are pushed on to you as the end user. As seen with the liquid glass updates, it's not always well received. Derek Sivers said it well on his Now Page.

Ditched iPhone and switched to Android. Feels great to adjust the device to my tastes, instead of adjust myself to Apple’s tastes.

It's a good reminder that the latest and greatest hardware is not required and Linux provides much more flexibility in user experience. Plus the latest X86 laptops have better battery life now. Maybe my next phone will be a Google Pixel and I will do a full switch back to Linux too.
